Although the IRGCN has significantly upgraded its fleet in terms of size and lethality since the end of the Iran-Iraq War, it remains a force composed of smaller platforms. It employs an asymmetric doctrine that emphasizes speed, mobility, large numbers, surprise, and survivability and takes advantage of Iran’s geography with the shallow and confined waterways of the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz. The IRGCN, which comprises approximately 20,000 personnel, is tasked with protecting primarily the Iranian littoral. The event usually entails a series of naval manoeuvres involving IRIN surface combatants, submarines, and CDCM forces. The IRIN typically conducts a major national-level exercise each year called VELAYAT. Iran continues to invest in domestically developing and producing more-capable subsurface platforms, including larger coastal submarines. Iran acquired three Russian Kilo-class attack submarines in the 1990s and began domestically producing North Korean Yono class midget submarines in the mid-2000s. Despite its need for new auxiliaries, Iran has given no indication it is planning to invest in acquiring new support vessels. Iran has been able to domestically build corvettes and patrol boats for the IRIN and upgrade legacy platforms with new capabilities, including antiship cruise missiles (ASCMs). If the IRIN is to fulfil its longer-term ambitions to function as a true blue-water navy, it will have to invest in more modern combatants and support ships. Since 2009, the IRIN has maintained near-continuous out-of-area naval deployments for counterpiracy operations in the Gulf of Aden, foreign port visits, and bilateral exercises with regional navies.ĭespite its ageing platforms, the IRIN has been moderately effective in maintaining readiness and sustaining operations. One of the IRIN’s key missions is to conduct out-of-area operations and naval diplomacy in the region and beyond. 4th ND: Headquartered at Bandar Anzali (Caspian Sea) IRIN Order of Battle Class.3rd ND: Headquartered at Chah Bahar (Gulf of Oman).2nd ND: Headquartered at Bushehr (Persian Gulf) and Jask (Gulf of Oman) 2nd ND HQ moving to Jask following 2007 reorganization.1st ND: Headquartered at Bandar Abbas (Strait of Hormuz) also the location of the IRIN’s Southern Forward Naval Head quarters (SFNHQ), which coordinates across all southern IRIN NDs.The IRIN is geographically divided into four NDs, with the central IRIN headquarters in Tehran. The IRIN also aims to secure Iranian economic interests by safeguarding the flow of commerce in the region from piracy and interdiction. The IRIN is Iran’s first line of defense in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. As part of Iran’s layered maritime defenses, the IRIN provides antisurface warfare capabilities focused on the Gulf of Oman with coastal defense cruise missiles (CDCMs), naval mines, surface combatants, and submarines. It consists of primarily older, small surface combatants along with mostly small submarines and some logistic support vessels. The service’s primary mission is to defend Iranian territorial waters and protect the country’s economic interests in the Caspian Sea, Gulf of Oman, and beyond. Iran is the only Persian Gulf nation with a submarine force, which the IRIN operates. The IRIN comprises approximately 18,000 personnel and is considered Iran’s “blue water navy” with its larger and more traditional surface ships compared with the IRGCN. ![]() The reorganization also provided the IRIN with a greater mandate to operate farther from the With the added responsibility, the IRGCN established two new naval districts (NDs) in the central and southern Persian Gulf. Both economic states can be positive or negative depending on the extreme to which they reach.Ĭontinuous inflation or deflation left unchecked can wound the economy. Is deflation worse than inflation?Įverything in moderation. Repaying debt on credit cards and mortgages also can become more of a challenge during a period of deflation as technically the money being paid back is now worth more than when they borrowed it. Lower consumer spending pushes companies to cut wages, and then people buy even less and prices continue to drop. If consumers see that prices are falling, they may be more likely to put off purchases to see if goods and services become even cheaper. ![]() Like inflation, deflation can be cyclical. Essentially, it’s a pattern of goods getting less expensive as consumer demand falls. Intuitively, it’s the opposite of inflation. But it does raise the question: Can prices actually fall? And would that be a good thing? Here’s a quick rundown: What is deflation?ĭeflation is the term economists use for a sustained period of dropping prices. ![]() ![]() It just means that already-high prices are rising more slowly than they did previously, giving shoppers a bit of a break. When the Fed meets to discuss how much inflation has come down, it doesn't mean prices are falling. While most Americans just want to know how much a carton of eggs is going to cost, economists have a whole vocabulary for how to predict that statistic. Inflation versus deflation? Bull market versus bear market? The economy is confusing enough for the average person without all the jargon. ![]() Please Login or Register to see this Hidden ContentĪKVIS Sketch. The 33MP full-frame Exmor R back-illuminated CMOS sensor offers a significant increase in resolution from the 24.2MP sensor in the a7 III. In our initial breakdown of the Sony a7 IV specs, we identified the camera’s new sensor as its most crucial update. That’s no easy feat given that the a7 III is one of Sony’s most popular cameras, at least in part due to its compact design and usability. Ultimately, the sum of these updates make the Sony a7 IV a more comfortable and easier to use camera. The menu is generally more user-friendly, although it may take some getting used to. The a7 IV also features Sony’s new menu system, which first debuted on the a7S III. The new LCD has full touch screen capabilities, while the a7 III display only supports this for its touch feature functionality. ![]() Additionally, the 3.0 type LCD has a 1.03-million-dot resolution, compared to 921,600-dot on the a7 III. Unlike the a7 III monitor, the new Vari-Angle screen on the a7 IV can open out to the side and is fully rotatable. One of our favorite improvements implemented for the a7 IV’s build is the rear display. Slot 1 can also use both SD/SDXC cards (UHS-I/II) and CFexpress Type A cards. Another change likely driven by user feedback of the a7 III. On the other side, the SD slot positions have been reversed, with Slot 1 now on top. On the left side of the a7 IV, the door panels have been improved and now contain a full-size HDMI port. These are great updates to the camera’s usability it certainly felt more intuitive to press record from the top, and the new joystick is great if you’re working with thick fingers. The joystick on the back is also larger and easier to use. It’s swapped positions with the record button, which is now on top of the camera between the dials. The C1 button that was located on top of the a7 III is now on the back of the a7 IV, next to the AF-ON button. Additionally, the dial that was used for exposure compensation on the a7 III is now unlabeled and customizable. Firstly, the PASM dial on top of the camera features a new second level for toggling between still, movie, and S&Q recording. However, it wasn’t noticeable at all thanks to a weight distribution adjustment Sony has implemented for the new model. ![]() ![]() The a7 IV is slightly larger at 5.2 x 3.8 x 3.1 inches and 1.5 lbs. OK, not so sure who goes into a Dunkin' Donuts looking for a sandwich - especially one from a vending machine, a sandwich that doesn't even try to feign being fresh - but give them points for at least trying.īack to the new Apple stores. If you need an automated navigational aid to find Band-Aids and a jar of strawberry jelly at Walmart or Costco, can you actually argue that they don't need a serious redesign?Įven Dunkin' Donuts' corporate people are toying with store design, with sandwich kiosks. Have you ever been in one of those stores and felt the need for a digital map? They use bright, clear signage and helpful store associates to make navigation effortless. Do you need an app to navigate an Apple Store? A Footlocker? Consider one of the chains that prides themselves on customer service, such as Whole Foods, Trader's Joe's or Nordstrom's. ![]() Mobile apps to help navigate in-store showrooms is both far too rare and an illustration of the problem. The store design overwhelmingly used in today's larger retail chains was created back in the day when e-commerce didn't exist and "mobile" meant a trailer. (See last month's column for more rants on retail checkout aggravation.) And there is no express lane, so buying two items still places you at the end of huge, slow-moving lane. If you need to pick up a few items, the prospect of trying to navigate the poorly labeled, massive aisles is daunting. Consider Costco, which is only slightly worse than Sam's Club and BJ's. There are some chains with an outstanding assortment of popular products and excellent prices - think Costco, Walmart and Target - that are exhausting to shop in. What customers want/expect/demand from stores today is quite different from they wanted/expected/demanded even five years ago. Readers of this column know that I have repeatedly argued that retailers need to radically rethink their stores. But the showroom is just that: a place to aesthetically present your top products. Let a customer ask for more of what is shown or for a less popular version not shown. Note: This is not to suggest that having 60,000 SKUs in the back of the store - away from customers' eyes - is bad. The strategy? When competing with e-commerce sites with seemingly infinite inventory, a physical store can't ultimately win by stuffing the store with more inventory than can be absorbed by a shopper. This allows for fewer books but it also enables a much more meaningful browsing experience. This is the same approach that Amazon has been taking with its handful of physical bookstores, where it displays books cover out. Peeking at the pictures of some of these new stores - such as one in Memphis and one in New York - the design is about simplicity and elegance. Retailers would be well served to take note. Conceding that the very nature of Apple's stores ( very limited inventory, complete control of key products, customers who walk in already willing to buy, etc.) makes them hard to compare with a Walmart, Target or Macy's, they are demonstrating what an in-store experience can be like. Apple is touting its newly redesigned Apple Stores, and they are indeed quite impressive. |
